Dave's (Un)Patented Bike Lock Stand

No Bike Stand, No Problem: Dave’s Bike Lock Stand

PROBLEM: Fixing your bike without a workshop bike stand is a pain in the saddle.

SOLUTION: Dave’s Bike Lock Stand™.

You will need
  • Your bike
  • Your bike lock (either cable lock or D-lock will do)
  • Something to hook onto, roughly 4 feet off the ground: a door handle, a tree branch, some random street furniture.
Method
  1. Attach your bike lock to something solid on your bike. You’ll have to experiment as bikes and hooks will vary, but I’ve had success with:
    • Through the rack
    • Under the saddle (pictured)
    • Between the seat stays on the frame.
  2. Hook your bike lock around whatever you’ve found to hook onto. Hey presto: your rear wheel is lifted off the ground and can spin freely when you turn the cranks.
  3. Get fixing! Now you can adjust gears and brakes or get cleaning as you would with an expensive heavy professional bike stand.

You’re welcome.

Notes and Warnings
  • If you’re using a door, you might find that you need to adjust somewhat so that your pedals don’t bash against the door. Locking on by your rack is better for doors than using your saddle, I’ve found.
  • Don’t lock on to your back wheel – unless you’re just using Dave’s Bike Lock Stand™ to clean your machine.
  • Pros use flower pots, stones or bricks to hold the front wheel in place.
    • Super pros use rubber bands to hold down the front brake.
  • You can even still use the door if you need to! (Although some people might be surprised to find a bike locked to their front door…)

* Dave’s Bike Lock Stand is not trademarked. Trademarks suck.
